The finding of a natural source for treatment of Variegate porphyria (VP) has been running into many obstacles, many ingredients showed initially with promising result in animal studies have not produced same potentials in large sample size and mutli centers human trials.

Variegate porphyria (VP) is the result of decreased protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPOX) in in biosynthesis of protoporphyrin IX activity and results in accumulation of porphyrins and porphyrin precursors. According to the Universitat de les Illes Balears, oral intake of vitamins E and C supplementation restores PPOX expression in VP patients and enhances antioxidants Glutathione reductase (GRd) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, of that suggested potential benefits of a diet rich in vitamins E(found abundantly in Sweet Potato) and C (found abundantly Orange)in these patients(1).
Dr, Ferrer MD and professor at the Universitat de les Illes Balears insisted, dietary supplementation with vitamin E (50 mg/d) andvitamin C (150 mg/d) for 6 months decreased plasma oxidative damage and enhanced the erythrocyte activities of CAT and GR. in patients with variegate porphyria (VP)(2).

Canthaxanthin, one of two major carotenoids found in tomato, significantly improved 2 out of 5 patients with Variegate porphyria (VP) according to Dr, Eales L.(3).

The effectiveness of Tomato, Orange and Sweet Potato may serve as cornerstones of pharmaceutical target for further studies in production of a potential medication for prevention and  treatment of Variegate porphyria (VP) with little or no adverse effects.

People who are at high risk of Variegate porphyria (VP)  due to family history, genetic mutation, ..... should drink at least one serving daily and people with Variegate porphyria (VP)  should drink the smoothie as much as they can, depending to digestive toleration.
Life style and dietary patter change are recommended.
